Summertime
Summertime, And The “Livin Ain’t” Easy Written: By Tom Wright 3-18-2008 I slept for five long hours and when I awoke I was dazed and wobbly like a wheel with bent spoke I showered & dressed and at the mirror did stare Brushing my teeth and combing at my hair While recalling bits and pieces of a dream I’d just had I found brainwork before coffee is pretty darn sad A half a pot later I’m still deadpanning the floor While hearing a thump just outside the front door With as great haste as the early hour would allow I retrieve the morning paper from beneath an old plow I think that each morning the paper people must huddle Making plans for each issue to soak up some puddle Why can’t they just put it in the box on the curb I guess its because I’m not considered a suburb At any rate, at the first thought, that today I’d just relax My accountant gives a wake up call about my income tax I booted the computer and found I’d been e-mailed Checked market conditions and found bad news prevailed As I pondered six hours mowing under a sun that can melt I cringed at the thought of my Cub throwing its belt. The only ray of joy and although its only a glimmer My shoulders won’t ache from using a string trimmer For Roundup has cared for each tree and stump crown And I hardly notice the ugly circles that are brown I’ve yet chores in the garden, like tomatoes to feed And take a hoe to the onions destroying each weed At the thought of all this work my stomach is queasy But hey, its summertime and the “livin” sure “ain’t” easy
