Valleys We Have Known
Morning lays low over cornfields of brown, Eagles on high search o'er the silent ground. Waters run deep through the valleys of green, While country roads still travel through this scene. Mountains above seem to look down with scorn, They been here long before towns had been born. They've held the cross and kept storms out at bay, Standing to guard forever and a day. Old corner stores had once traded coupons, Five and dime kids cleared the shelves of bonbons. Echoes grow soft of the crowds that passed through, Vacancy signs tell the stories for you. Mothers, fathers, and families moved on, Ties of the land never kept them that strong. Drought and flood, the famine and disease, Broke spirits quick, drove 'em all to their knees. Morning breaks bright as it has for all time, O'er mountains high standing for those that climb. Eagles on high ride light the breeze's waves; Waters run deep over forgotten graves.
