What is a black man supposed to be?
How is a black man supposed to act?
When is a black man supposed to talk?
Why can’t I find the answers?

Why are you trying to tell me
What a black man supposed to be?
When you don’t wake up with my skin.
How are you the expert on my race?

You wake up and have everything
Handed to you when I fought for it.
I had to fight the prejudice against me
While you live your life with ease

I don’t act black enough because
Of the habits and interest I have.
I’m judged by those who share
The same type of struggle we both face

I’m thrown into whatever category
You want to define me as until
I do something that benefits you.
I’m feeling that from both sides

Why shouldn’t I talk about the
Racism surrounding me?
Why can you critique my race
But it’s taboo when I make a statement

I’m tired of being gaslit
That it’s normal for you
To keep treating me as
An inferior creature to you.

I’m not talking nonsense
I’m not going manic but
It doesn’t matter cause
You won’t listen to what I say

Stop telling me I should be me
What is that supposed to mean?

I just wish I knew all the answers.
